For over 30 years, the Human Needs Food Pantry has provided food, clothing, and other services to people in need who live in Montclair and neighboring communities in Essex County. Our diverse client base includes families and singles who are elderly, disabled, home-bound, unemployed, or underemployed (working poor). Eligibility is determined using federal guidelines, which base need on income.
Established in 1982 as an outreach program of the First Baptist Church of Montclair, the Human Needs Food Pantry later became an independent 501(c)(3) non-profit organization and moved to a small rented space on Greenwood Avenue.
In 2005, the pantry moved into its newly built facility at 9 Label Street, which holds a food warehouse, the "Upstairs" clothing rooms, and a client service area.
There are many ways to donate to the food pantry. In addition to making monetary donations, you can donate any of the following:
Non-perishable foods: canned goods like tuna, canned fruit or vegetables, soups, canned chicken or similar items. We CANNOT accept expired foods, so please check the dates before bringing items to us!
Non-food items: diapers (open packs OK) and baby wipes; unopened personal-care items such as soap, shampoo, toothpaste, toothbrushes, deodorant, feminine hygiene products, etc.; paper towels, tissues, toilet paper; cleaning supplies, detergent, etc.
Clothing: we have a large clothing program for our clients in need. Please only donate season-appropriate clothing (all sizes, but adult XXL most in demand) in new or like-new condition--no stains, rips, or visible wear.
Sheets, blankets, towels, and kitchen items: new or like-new condition.
Throughout the year, we run targeted drives for specific items such as school supplies, Halloween costumes, and holiday gifts. "Like" us on Facebook to receive up-to-the-minute information.
